Melanotaenia vanheurni „Gidomen“

Gidomen ist ein kleines Bergdorf am Oberlauf des Taritatu (einem der beiden Hauptarme des Mamberamo River). Eigentlich sind wir nur durch Zufall dorthin geraten, denn auf dem Rückflug von Dekai war noch etwas Zeit für einen Zwischenstopp. Wir fanden dort gleich drei neue Regenbogenfische: eine Chilatherina, einen Glossolepis und die hier vorgestellte M. vanheurni-Form. Während Chilatherina und Glossolepis im Hauptkanal des Flusses lebten, fanden wir M. vanheurni nur in einem kleinen Bach, der in einer tiefen Rinne verlief, zu dem Zeitpunkt aber nur wenig Wasser führte. Wir fanden nur kleine Tiere, die größten ca. 4 cm lang. Farblich ist diese Form in Pastelltönen gehalten, die je nach Lichteinfall ins Pink spielen. Erst im Sonnenlicht entfaltet sich die ganze Pracht. Die Art ist problemlos zu halten, wird aber groß (siehe M. vanheurni Faowi) und benötigt demzufolge ein großes Aquarium.

Gidomen is a little village in the upper reaches of the Taritatu River (one of the two main branches of the Mamberamo River). We got there by chance – on the way back from Dekai we had some time for a stop. We found three new Rainbowfishes: a Chilatherina, a Glossolepis and the form of M. vanheurni presented here. While the Chilatherina and the Glossolepis living in the main channel, we found the M. vanheurni only in a small creek that run through a deep crevice, but with low water at this point of time. We found only small fish, the largest being around 4 cm. Regarding colors, this form has distinct pastel tones, regarding to the light going into pink. The best colors are shown in the sunlight. This species is easy to keep but gets large and therefore needs a large aquarium (see M. vanheurni Faowi).
